Finally, an Italian beer I can get behind.
While in Santa Cruz for the holiday weekend, we've been checking out all of the restaurants that have opened since we left, back in 1999. Needless to say, there's a lot of ground to make up. The first we hit was La Posta, a great little Italian restaurant near the house we rented in Seabright. As happy as I was with the menu (which rocked), I was doubly happy with the selection of beer. Most Italian restaurants put all of their care into their wine list. When it comes to beer, they typically fall back to Moretti, which truly is the Budweiser of Italy. La Posta breaks that nasty Italian habit by featuring a number of 375ml and 750ml bottles made by folks breaking the mold in Italy.
We went with a 750ml bottle of Super Baladin by Birrificio Le Baladin. It's not exactly what I think of when I think of an Italian beer - and that's really nice. Super Baladin pours a rich, hazy orange with very little head. It's a slightly malty beer with some subtle floral and fruity notes.
What made me so happy about this beer is that it went really well with everything we ordered. It made its precense known without overpowering the meal. It was a good companion to a meal with, well, good companions. If you come across it on a menu sometime, grab a bottle and share it with a friend. You'll be glad you did.
